Dec'r 12. 79-6t What skall be Done?āThe Raleigh Stan dard, in answer to this question, says:ā 'āShould the State secede with South Carolina? We think not. Should she, in any event, sepa rate lierself from the middle, breadstuff States, and unite her destinies with the cotton States? We think not. No cotton State has thus far even consulted her, though several of them are preparing to go out. It is true no middle State has consulted her; but ihis^fact affords the bĀ«st proot that the middle States are not even contem* plating dissolution. The interests of North Caro lina are much more indentified with Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Maryland, than they are with South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas. When f/uy manifest a disposition to dis solve the Union it will be time enough for her to move. Any attempt to establish a ācotton Confederacy" will fail. It might last a few years, and it might escape a degrading dependence on foreign powers; but the people of such a Confede racy would not be able to subsist on cotton. A king is nothing without lords and commons. Scf it would bawith cotton.ā \V. At last his perseverance was rewarded. He discovered the cabalisticrwords āto letā upon a building that pleased his fancy in all respects. The bill directed him to inquire for particulars at a house opposite, and with a light step he repaired thither, and ascending the stair case, rang the bell. The servant directed him to the floor below. ā¢ Now it happened that the desired house had long been vacant, and the lessor had almost de spaired of renting it although he was most eager to d() so. Under these circumstances, it seemed certain that the bargain would be readily ft>nsum- mated, to the great satisfaction of both parties. The applicant introduced himself to the land lord with the following words: āSir; observing that yonder house was to let, and following directions, I inquired at this house, on the floor above; but the servant told me to ap ply to you down in the kitchen here, and ā āI beg pardon, sir, this is not a kitchen; itās a basement.ā āHow? I donāt wish to dispute you, sir, but /say itās a kitchen.ā ā1 say itās a basement. Havenāt 1 lived long enough to learn the difference between a kitchen and a basement?ā āItās not a basement; itās a kitchen.ā āI say, itās a basement.ā āItās a kitchen.ā āItās a basement.ā āConfound you and your basement, eirl You may keep your house, sir. I'll i^bt hire it, sir. No sirānot if there were no other house in the city.ā āAnd I, sir, would not let you the house at any priceānot if you were to pay me double its value per month. Good day, sir.ā Thus in quarrelling over a mere abstraction, in which neither gained thefr point, both gentlemen not only defeated the objects they had at heart, but suffered serious lo&s. Perhaps the reader can discover some analogy between the foregoing and our present political difliculties.āJournal of Commerce. āBletsed are the Peacemakers"āMr Critten den, of Kentucky, and Mr. Boteler, of Virginia, are the first to come forward in the national Con gress, to heal, if possible, the dangerous dissen sions which agitate the country. Their efforts may be unavailn^; the chasm which threatens to divide a people now mighty and prosperous, may engulf the States in one common ruin; commerce may be blighted, and every cheek become blanched by the horrors of civil war; but those names will always be revered and cherished as the heritage of the nation, which are associated with efforts to assuage the violence of human passion, and pre serve inviolate the Union, which was established at euch an immense cost of blood and treasure. N. y. Journal of Commerce. College Lifs.āSome disgraceful proceedings at Harvard College, when the Sophomores went through their usual process of worrying the Freshmen, have in duced the Faculty to determine to put an end forever to this annually recurring scene of brutality. We have always been astonished, both that the Faculty of any College would wink at such scenes, and that any young man with a spark of gentlemanly or generous feeling in his nature would engage in them. The following re marks from the N. Y. World make an appeal which must reach the heart of every such Collegian;ā āLads fresh from quiet homes, untaught in the mys terious ways of college life, yet friendless because so recently placed iu their new positions that they have ! had no time to make frierds, with, most likely, their i first heart-sinking fit of home sickness full upon them, are seized by those who have gone through the same sad experience, and made the butt of brutality, which , stops just short of serious personal violence, and some- I times passes that boundary. There is no possible de- ! fence of these proceedings, and no palliation except ^ their traditionary character. Long usage is held to i justify them; aud the lad who resists in earnest, and on \ the ground of right, unless he can endure much, and carry matters with a very high hand, is broken in by the force of numbers, and the public opinion of the strange place in which be encounters this trying expe rience.ā LIABILITIES.
